Camp Quest West

Camp Quest West prepares for its third camp year, again providing a fun learning experience for children of parents who prefer avoiding connections to religious topics. This is not to say parents wish to avoid morality and ethical matters. Quite the contrary, they desire development of their children’s abilities to think responsibly for themselves. These parents usually describe themselves as being either atheist, agnostic, Humanist, or Freethinker, or some combination.

Camp Quest West is one of six camps within Camp Quest, Inc. The other five camps are located in central and eastern United States, as well as Canada. Camp Quest West uses camp facilities near Nevada City, CA. Camp dates are July 13–19, 2008.

The camp has grown from its initial year. Last year (the second year), the number of campers had to be limited because of the size of the camp. This year, the camp is moving to a larger facility at Camp Ross Relies. The larger camp will also open the opportunity to include added programs. The new programs include a “day camp” option for 7-year olds, a parent campout, and a teen adventure camp. The fees for the baseline camp are $390 early registration, and $460 after May 1. Baseline camp is open to boys and girls, ages 8 – 15. Staff-in-training opportunities are available for ages 16-17.

The camp director, Chris Lindstrom, resides in Los Altos. Lindstrom has been the principal leader from day one, striving always for a safe and enjoyable learning experience for each and every camper. She also has stressed among board members and supporters to take the extra step to make the camp an ongoing and thriving organization.

The camp makes use of outside experts to come in for a day to present their materials. An example from last year was Michael Newdow, who talked to the campers about standing up for their rights and how they can make use of the legal system. (Newdow had the experience of arguing his own case before the Supreme Court.)
