2008 Don Edwards Civil Liberties Award Presentation & Reception
The Don Edwards Civil Liberties Award is presented annually by the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California to an individual or organization that has played a significant role in promoting or defending civil liberties in the Santa Clara Valley community during the past year.
This year’s award will be presented to Barbara J. Attard, head of the City of San Jose’s Office of the Independent Police Auditor. In 2007 Ms. Attard completed her third year in this capacity, where she has been a courageous and persistent advocate for greater civilian oversight and greater public accountability of the SJPD.
The Santa Clara Valley ACLU board of directors applauds the significant contribution that Barbara Attard has made by publicly advocating for greater transparency in the citizen police complaint process through public records access, greater and earlier involvement by the independent police auditor in the handling of citizen complaints, public accountability of police and a more independent process for investigation of deaths caused by police weapons (including tasers) and deaths while persons are in (or being taken into) police custody.
